Registering IFAJ requires us to change the organization’s name. Find out why and help us prepare for the future.
As the Executive and Delegate Assembly have discussed over the past several years, we are registering IFAJ Ltd. as a corporation in the United Kingdom for several reasons, including the ability to include officers and executives from around the world. (Not every country permits that.) To register IFAJ, we must present Articles of Association—our Constitution—and Rules for review to regulators.
There’s one significant challenge we face as we prepare for registration.
Following the direction of the Executive, IFAJ will maintain our current system of voting based on the number of members represented by each guild. By law, we cannot define ourselves as a federation under UK law. That means will have us register as a different type of organization and change our name to reflect that we are no longer a federation. That creates several options:
- We could keep the IFAJ acronym and replace “Federation” with another F-word such as “Fellowship,” “Fraternity,” or “Forum.” Another option would be to incorporate “Food” into the name, for example: International Food and Agriculture Journalists.
- We could keep “IFAJ” without assigning definitions for the letters, and modify it with a tagline, like “IFAJ: The International Agricultural Journalists’ Organization.”
- We could keep most of the structure of the current name but change the descriptor and its letter to something like “Alliance” (IAAJ), or “Conference,” “Caucus” or “Community” (ICAJ).
- Finally, we could take this opportunity to rename the organization entirely.
Please note that this is not the first time we have changed our name. What is now IFAJ started 70 years ago as the International Union of Agricultural Journalists (IUAJ), only becoming the IFAJ we know today in 1963.
We are gathering suggestions in September to share with the Executive and Delegate Assembly as we prepare for our meetings in Nairobi at the IFAJ Congress.
