Despite, today is the World Refugee Day the UNHCR Relief department is planning to join the forces aiming to help a young-boy who is seeking medical relief and contacted to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) through their local media partner organization better named SOMESHA on May 28th this year. The World Refugee Day is an international day organized every year on 20 June by the United Nations. It is designed to celebrate and honour refugees from around the world. The day was first established on 20 June 2001, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.
Somalia is a country facing significant displacement challenges, acting as both a source and host of refugees. Approximately 3.1 million people are of concern to the UNHCR – The UN Refugee Agency, including refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced persons (IDPs). While many Somalis have sought refuge in neighboring countries like Kenya and Ethiopia, there’s also a notable number of returns to Somalia, both voluntary and forced.
Somalia faces ongoing conflict, insecurity, and climate-related crises, with millions displaced. UNHCR supports displaced communities through protection, assistance, and efforts to promote long-term solutions.
In 2024, Somalia faced continued conflict, political tensions, and climate-related disasters – including floods and drought – that displaced over 550,000 people, adding to the nearly 3 million already internally displaced. Most new displacements were caused by violence in regions such as Gedo, Lower Juba, and Banadir, as well as flooding along the Shabelle and Juba rivers. Humanitarian access improved in some areas but remained limited in Al-Shabaab-controlled zones due to insecurity and bureaucratic hurdles.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency works to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge, having fled violence, persecution or war at home since that Mustaf Elmi Mohamed’s case is just an IDP-like while UNHCR is also looking another alternative map to relocate him to a second nation like Kenya soon before all medical aspects is setting up.

Alexander Ponsen, Reporting Officer, UNHCR explained, “Despite various challenges is existing currently in Somalia yet we have a goal to expand our dreams forward as UNHCR works closely with national ministries of health and partner organizations so that refugees can get the health support and medical treatment they need in emergencies as well as in stabilized and protracted situations. “Similarly, health is a fundamental human right for all, including refugees so we are now developing ways we can relocate the young Somali boy who is really a brave new graduate man to Kenya by looking solutions to support response and recovery efforts.
“In such circumstances, UNHCR helps resettle refugees to a third country to help improve their medical operations so that resettlement is the transfer of refugees from an asylum country to another State”. he added
The UNHCR provides comprehensive medical support to refugees and displaced populations, focusing on primary and secondary healthcare, including mental health and psychosocial support, reproductive health, and disease prevention. They work with partners to establish health facilities, train staff, and ensure access to essential services, often integrating refugees into national health systems.
